At first, Rammstein's "Bestrafe Mich" seems to be about SM, but Rammstein has a way of turning the meaning of songs around with puns (e.g. "Du hasst mich" — "Du hast mich gefragt"). In this case, the pun is a twist ending that reveals the song isn't about arousal but a lack thereof: in the entire song, the submissive is referred to in first person until the last verse seems to switch to third person for one line before going right back to first person in the next line: it implies that the entire song must be taken as referring to him in first person, and in this context, "deine Größe macht ihn klein" must be taken to refer to the penis (which in German is masculine "der" rather than neuter), so that it actually says "you're so 'great' that you turn me off", hence in the next line "Bestrafer" is replaced by "Strafe": just being near you is a punishment. The comparison of religion to SM is not just a criticism of religion but also of the other person. I only saw this meaning when I experienced first hand how, to an independent person, arrogance is the best anaphrodisiac there is: it's a rejection of that independence and therefore of who one is. Till hinted he's into SM when he said he "knows" a dominatrix, but healthy SM is based on trust rather than authority, and heavy metal is based on independence. Perhaps that was S' problem with heavy metal.
Deine Große macht ihn klein
