Slavery and Jazz

Everything leads to its opposite, and the physical slavery of blacks led them to compensate with a freedom of spirit. Negro spirituals led to jazz, and when the gramophone allowed this music to spread despite its counterculturalism, it may have influenced a movement away from realism and towards expressionism. Modernism may never have had so much momentum if it wasn't for slavery.
