The way we exchange trivia about ourselves is more than just smalltalk: to truly understand someone, anything you know about them can be meaningful, as it all forms part of the unconscious substrate from which their conscious arises. It's easier to understand what someone means by what they say or do when you know what influences brought them to that point.
