Novice mystics see the universe as an extension of themselves. In fact, it is they who are an extension of the universe, like a mirror reflecting its image. Their real self is beyond the boundaries of their skin, and in fact may not even include the skin: it's a confluence of energy waves that originate outside the body in the form of sensations, but flow together in the brain as consciousness, like a hologram. We think we are our body because it's where we are conscious of being, where our consciousness arises, but when you look at just how this happens, you see that the chains of its causality extends much farther than just the electromagnetism in the brain, through the electromagnetism outside the brain, ever outwards like a network throughout the universe — not unlike the network of our neurons.
