We need each other. We evolved together and wouldn't have been able to do it if each of us was alone. The very act of reproduction shows just how crucial it is to have multiplicity in a species: to exaggerate, it's a little as if we are all part of a greater organism, humanity, but of course that's just an analogy and you have to be careful not to take it too far: we don't owe each other anything, but we only made it this far because we worked together. What we should consider when someone else is in trouble is whether that person is worth saving as part of the group. Almost invariably, the answer is yes, because we live in an Information Age and the information produced by their brain and entire organism is a precious resource in itself.
