Sympathy (pity) seeks to keep someone away from pain, to keep them in their comfort zone. Empathy (compassion) knows that sometimes pain is needed and does not deny it when it's necessary to help someone grow. Empathy is to regard another as oneself, and anyone sane does not try to keep any feeling away. Empathy can therefore involve hate as well as love, but sympathy is closer to contempt than it is to empathy: it's dismissive, like whisking a beggar away with a coin. An example of sympathy is colonialist paternalism, and an example of empathy is a mother's tough love.
