Initially, strong AI would be very expensive just like every other new technology, so that it would not sell at all except as brain prostheses, first in the medical sector and later, as it becomes more efficient than our own brain, as a form of self-improvement. Helping the brain do its thing is a lot easier than creating an entirely new brain from scratch, and by the time it would be cheap enough for a few eccentrics to bother buying an AI companion just for fun, most people would already be partly AI and AI would be as normal as cellphones. This is why I think anyone who thinks AI will come in the form of intelligent robots is more serious of a science-fiction fan than a futurist.
