If you look up "homicide world map" in Google Images you can quickly overview a high number of statistical studies. Whichever one you choose to believe, they all tell much the same story: in the developed world, the homicide rate is much higher anywhere there's a lot of guns. Of course correlation doesn't prove causation, but it surely proves that if guns are supposed to prevent homicide, they're just not working, meaning it's not worthwhile to keep them available to everyone.
When we run background checks, we should take into account how long it would take the police to get there. If you live in a remote area (which there are admittedly a lot of in the US) and it's over maybe 10 minutes, then you can get a lethal gun. If you have a break-in, you can hide, barricade yourself and win at least that much time, especially if you prepare yourself e.g. by keeping keys on every doorlock from the front door to the hallway to the bedroom.
Now if you have an abusive friend or family member and they might try to kill you at any moment without you seeing it coming, a gun isn't likely to help: you won't know when they're actually going to kill you, so you'll hesitate, and that moment of hesitation will be enough for them to disarm you, after which they'll just be much more likely to kill you. If you want to keep something under your pillow for when a killer wakes you up just as they loom over you, you're in close enough range that a taser would be much more reliable.
