There's a very simple reason for why alcohol is enshrined in the West and forbidden in the Middle East: in the medieval West, alcohol, as an antiseptic, prevented food poisoning from stale food, while in the Middle East, the sun was enough of a preservative and alcohol just caused dehydration.
