To make sure that a degree will get you a job and all those years you studied for it aren't for nothing, universities can only hand out as many degrees as there are jobs in the field. There is no reason why everyone who wanted to couldn't succeed in gaining the knowledge needed for a job: nature is logical and therefore easy to understand, easier than the complexities of the most complex layer of existence which is that of our own lives. So the only way universities could keep enough students failing to make degrees meaningful is to make it hard not on their intellect but on their emotions. Make the process as humiliating as possible, by forcing students to study irrelevant subject matter and isolating them from each other.
