Biologists are too quick to assume that the societies of animals are the way they are because of necessity, just because they've been around for longer than our own. This is likely because it is so hard for us to conceive of the lack of empathy that most lower animals have, and which makes it hard for them to distinguish between friend and foe, and because the dangers of a foe are often far greater than the rewards of a friend, if there is any competition at all, most animals will not trust each other by default. Humans are not infallible, so far less social animals certainly aren't either. All species are constantly in the process of evolving, a work in progress that's fraught with errors. Social connection must be seen as a resource that can be just as scarce as nutrients and so on, because they likewise have to be produced.
